Job Shadow
Out of the three job shadows that I had done, going to a nursing home was the one that impacted me the most. Reason being is because on my mother’s side of the family they all have a career in the medical field and my sister is going to college to also pursue a career in that field as well. I thought maybe I should follow in my sister’s footsteps or the families in that matter. I got to experience some interaction with the people who lived there and I got to see how their lives were and most importantly what the nurses had to do to care for them. In those moments I started to realize this wasn’t the career I wanted for myself. A nurse has a lot of responsibilities like caring for the patients, dealing with the family members of these patients and more. Watching the nurse having to constantly administering medication and making sure the dose match the patient. I couldn’t pursue a career in this field for the simple fact that you are liable for someone’s life. On top of that needles made me queasy. Majority of the patients in a long term setting require assistant with their ADL’s, failure to do so under state guide is consider neglect. I was grateful to be able to have gone to this job shadow because it helped me realized that this wasn’t the career path I chose to pursue.
